Kemal
Gekich is a technical wizard in a class by himself in terms of sheer
mastery of pianistic mechanics. His spectacular appearances at major competitions
in Warsaw (1985) and Montreal (1988) launched him on a performing career
that spans five continents and most of the solo repertoire. His landmark
recording of the Liszt Transcendental Etudes shows Gekich to be a musician's
musician, thoughtful, and dedicated to the development of highly evolved
and personal interpretations which make his playing recognizable
- a high asset in this day and age of generic virtuosi. Kemal Gekich is
now artist-in-residence at Florida International University, Miami.
These pages introduce you to Kemal Gekich, the forceful personality that drew Alan Fraser from Montreal across the Atlantic to the Balkans, in what was then still known as Yugoslavia.
In Gekich's reviews one comes across more and more frequent comparisons to Franz Liszt, and a plethora of superlatives describe his technique, his musicality, his spirit, his emotion...
The pages that follow
attempt to give some indication of the scope of his talents, his abilities,
his dedication. But of course, do not stop here; go and hear him, listen
to him on CD - the pianism and personality of Kemal Gekich is a phenomenon
not to be missed.
